    Course Overview

This course is an introduction into the theory and applications of FRED 2025. It will cover all the existing consequence modelling scenarios within the software, including source term modelling, pool formation, gas dispersion, jet and pool fires, impinging fires, vessel burst smoke ingress in buildings/temporary refuge and explosion scenarios in congested and/or confined areas.

This course combines both theory and practical exercises, therefore students will be required to practice and apply their new knowledge of the software through hands-on exercises.

    Course Objectives

At the end of the course, delegates should achieve the following key learning outcomes:

    • Ensure good understanding of the features of FRED (models, scenarios, etc.).
    • Explain the workflow in using FRED.
    • Introduce various functionality within FRED.
    • Ensure the attendees are able to use FRED to set up, run and extract results for a basic range of typical scenarios.

    Organisational Benefits

In addition to the professional skill development of staff, the organisation will have the capability to utilise an industry recognised consequence modelling tool that will assist in carrying out safety related studies effectively and accurately, including:

    • Consequence / Severity studies (hazard distances for explosions, jet and pool fires, flammable cloud extents)
    • Mitigative measures (assess the impact of mitigation on ignited event consequences)
    • Risk management (input to Quantitative Risk Assessment)
    • Regulatory compliance (COMAH / Seveso, ALARP demonstration, ATEX/ DSEAR, etc.)

    Attendees Professional Benefits

Attendees will be able to use FRED for process safety related projects, which also means:

    • Development of new skill and knowledge
    • Appreciation of hazard distances associated with a range of ignited events
    • Development of competency to carry out various process safety related studies
    • Able to develop recommendations on safety related studies
    • Supports attendee’s input to risk planning and mitigation
