    A Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) is a structured and systematic technique used to identify potential hazards and operability problems in a process or operation.

    This course will provide participants with a good understanding of the purpose, limitations and methodology to conduct a Hazards and Operability study. The training covers preparation for a HAZOP workshop, how to select the nodes and some examples of a terms of reference document, HAZOP workshop facilitation and reporting. A practical workshop will allow participants to apply the learnings applied.  

  • Course Objectives

    1. Understanding HAZOP Methodology: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the HAZOP study process, including its purpose, scope, and key components.
    2. Hazard Identification: Learn techniques for identifying potential hazards and operability issues within a process.
    3. Risk Management: Understand how to apply the hierarchy of risk management to control identified hazards.
    4. Team Dynamics: Develop skills to effectively lead and participate in multidisciplinary HAZOP teams.
    5. Apply HAZOP techniques: Performed through practical examples.
    6. Reporting and Recommendations: Learn how to document findings and propose actionable recommendations to mitigate risks.

  • Course Outline

    What is the purpose and limitation of a HAZOP study 
    •    High-level review of the HAZOP methodology as outlined in EN 61882 
    •    Practical workshop to provide training attendees with HAZOP experience.

    How to prepare for a HAZOP study:
    •    What level of information is required to conduct a HAZOP study
    •    What is a node and how to divide a process into manageable nodes to be reviewed in a HAZOP study
    •    Selecting suitable deviations for the HAZOP Study
    •    Selecting an effective HAZOP team
    •    Producing a Terms of Reference (ToR) document, outlining scope and methodology for a HAZOP Study.

    How to facilitate a HAZOP workshop:
    •    Identifying cause consequence scenarios, including all applicable safeguards
    •    Conducting consequence severity/risk scoring
    •    Identifying suitable actions/recommendations
    •    Effective recording of a HAZOP workshop
    •    Workshop team management to ensure efficient and effective workshop sessions
    •    How to produce a suitable HAZOP report to manage the implementation of the actions.

    ·         Anyone who wishes to facilitate HAZOP studies in the future.

    ·         Current facilitator with limited experience.

    ·         HAZOP participants who wish to improve their understanding of the HAZOP methodology and contribute efficiently.  

  • Prerequisites

    Prerequisites: None, although basic process engineering knowledge is assumed.
